DENTAL IMPLANTS

Natural-looking replacements for missing teeth

Missing teeth can affect more than just your smile. They can also have a negative impact on your oral health.

If a tooth is lost to decay, knocked out or extracted, the teeth on either side of the space can start to move out of alignment and become crooked. Implant dentistry is a permanent solution for filling the gap and restoring the look, feel and function of your smile.

If you want to replace one or more teeth with natural-looking restorations, talk to our dentists in Sydney about dental implants, mini implants and All-on-4® treatments. We’ll explain everything you need to know about the procedure and the costs and risks involved, so you can decide whether implant dentistry is right for you.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a fine titanium rod or screw that’s placed in your jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. Once in place, the implant integrates with the bone and serves a similar function to your missing tooth root. It also helps to stimulate new bone growth in your jaw and prevent it from shrinking.

Dental implants can be used to replace one or several missing teeth. Once the implant has been placed and fused with your jaw, we can cover it with a replacement crown or permanent denture that looks and feels just like a natural tooth.

Implants are a more permanent alternative to removable dentures and offer more support for your jaw than a fixed bridge. However, not everyone is suitable for implant treatments. If your jaw is too small to support an implant, we may recommend a bone graft, unless you have a medical condition that prevents this. We may also recommend an alternative treatment such as All-on-4®.

Once your dental implant and replacement tooth has been fitted, it needs to be cared for just like the rest of your teeth. Artificial teeth that are not regularly brushed and flossed can develop plaque and tartar, which can lead to dental problems such as gum disease. That’s why it’s important to maintain a regular and thorough at-home oral care routine and to visit us every six months for your regular check-up.

Mini dental implants

If you’re choosing implants to support removable dentures, we may recommend mini dental implants. These are roughly the size of toothpicks and are placed about 5mm apart in your jawbone during a minor surgical procedure.

Mini implants are made of titanium just like standard implants, except they have a ball-shaped head. The retaining denture features a rubber O-ring that snaps over the ball like a socket and holds the denture in place with the level of force desired.

Once fitted, the denture will gently rest on your gum. You’ll be able to bite and chew as normal, and you can remove and replace your dentures with ease to help you maintain a good oral hygiene routine.

All-on-4®

If you want to replace your whole upper or lower arch of teeth, or even your whole smile, we may recommend All-on-4® dental implants.

These offer all the support of traditional implants, the differences being that only four implants are needed to support an entire arch and no bone grafting is needed. All-on-4® may be an option if you’re not a candidate for standard implants.
